اندومتریوز یک بیماری مزمن پیچیده است که متأثر از هورمون استروژن می­باشد و با رشد بافتی شبیه به اندومتر در خارج از رحم مشخص می‌شود. این بیماری پیچیده، میلیون‌ها زن را در سراسر جهان تحت تأثیر قرار می‌دهد و به صورت درد شدید لگن، ناباروری قابل توجه و کاهش عمیق کیفیت زندگی آن­ها بروز می‌کند. درمان این مشکلات بالینی نیاز به پیشرفت در ابزارهای تشخیصی و استراتژی‌های درمانی دارد. این مقاله به بررسی رابطه پیچیده بین اسیدلاکتیک مشتق از اندومتریوز و زیرمجموعه خاصی از سلول‌های ایمنی، معروف به سلول‌های سرکوبگر مشتق از میلوئید (MDSCs) می‌پردازد. هدف ما روشن کردن مسیرهای بیولوژیکی ظریفی است که بر این تعامل مهم تأثیر می‌گذارند. لاکتات‌ها متعاقباً باعث گسترش و فعال شدن MDSC ها می‌شوند که سپس سرکوب ایمنی را از طریق مولکول‌های سیگنالینگ کلیدی مانند فاکتور القا شده توسط هیپوکسی 1-آلفا، مبدل سیگنال و فعال‌کننده رونویسی 3، فاکتور هسته‌ای کاپا-زنجیره سبک-تقویت‌کننده سلول‌های B فعال شده افزایش می‌دهند. فراتر از نقش آن در تعدیل سیستم ایمنی، این تعامل پیچیده بین اسید لاکتیک و MDSCها به عنوان یک عامل محوری در پاتوژنز چندوجهی اندومتریوز می­ باشد. این امر به طور قابل توجهی در بدتر شدن بیماری، از جمله گسترش تهاجمی آن، ایجاد رگ‌های خونی جدید (آنژیوژنز) و تشکیل بافت فیبروتیک و اسکار مانند نقش دارد. این فرضیه مروری که تعدیل هدفمند متابولیسم لاکتات می‌تواند به عنوان یک استراتژی درمانی امیدوارکننده برای تنظیم فعالیت MDSC عمل کند، مطرح شده است. هدف از این مطالعه، روشن کردن این رویدادهای پیچیده سلولی و مولکولی است.
