ناباروری به طور فزاینده‌ای به یک چالش پزشکی جهانی تبدیل شده است. گفته می‌شود که مواجهه با عوامل محیطی در تولید مثل اختلال ایجاد می‌کند. این مطالعه مروری با تمرکز بر تأثیرات آب و هوا و مواجهه با مواد شیمیایی بر عملکردهای تولید­مثلی و نتایج درمان­های کمکی به بارداری در منطقه مدیترانه شرقی انجام شده است. استراتژی جستجو در پایگاه‌های داده PubMed و Scopus بر مقالات منتشره از ژانویه ۲۰۱۲ تا ژوئن ۲۰۲۴ اعمال شد. در کل ۶۳ مطالعه که عوامل اقلیمی، مواجهه با مواد شیمیایی، عناصر کمیاب و سیگار کشیدن را در بین جمعیت منطقه مدیترانه شرقی بررسی می‌کردند، در بررسی گنجانده شدند. حدود 59% (37 = n) و 36% (23 = n) از انتشارات مورد تجزیه و تحلیل، به ترتیب عوامل مردانه و عوامل زنانه را ارزیابی کرده بودند. کاهش پارامترهای اسپرم با دمای بالا، بیسفنول A و مواجهه با گرد و غبار هوا مرتبط بود. سیستم تولید­مثل غدد درون­ریز مردان تحت تأثیر منفی فتالات‌ها و محصولات حاوی آفت‌کش‌ها قرار می‌گیرد. عناصر کمیاب نقش دوگانه‌ای در تولید­مثل نشان دادند. مشخص شد که افراد سیگاری قهار در مقایسه با افراد سیگاری معمولی، کیفیت مایع منی ضعیف‌تری دارند. شواهد موجود که به طور خلاصه اثرات زیست‌محیطی و عادات سیگار کشیدن و پیامدهای کمک به ناباروری را بررسی می‌کند، محدود و به طور ناهماهنگی در سراسر منطقه مورد مطالعه قرار گرفته است. پرداختن به نابرابری‌های گسترده بهداشتی و اختلافات فرهنگی و اجتماعی در منطقه می‌تواند آگاهی عمومی، آموزش، سیاست‌گذاری و لزوم تدوین مقررات را افزایش دهد.
