اسپرم در سیستم تولید­مثلی زنان، آخرین مرحله بلوغ خود را که به عنوان ظرفیت­‌یابی شناخته می­‌شود، طی می­‌کند و خود را برای لقاح با تخمک آماده می‌­سازد. مکانیسم‌­های ظرفیت­‌یابی شامل: تغییرات در ترکیب غشاء، غلظت الکترولیت، سطح pH، مسیرهای سلولی و مولکولی، آبشارهای سیگنالینگ، فسفوریلاسیون پروتئین اسپرم و فعالیت کانال­‌های اختصاصی اسپرم است. ظرفیت­‌یابی یک فرآیند کاملاً تنظیم ‌شده است زیرا باید در زمان و مکان مناسب رخ دهد. در این مطالعه برای جست­و­جو و بازیابی داده‌ها از Google Scholar, Scopus,  web of Science Core Collection, and PubMed/MEDLINE استفاده شد. دو پیامد اصلی ظرفیت‌­یابی، تغییرات در ترکیب غشاء و تغییرات در نوع حرکت اسپرم است. عمدتاً در مایع سیمن عوامل ظرفیت­‌زدایی، قرار دارند که باید از ظرفیت­‌یابی اولیه اسپرم انزالی جلوگیری کنند. با حذف مایع سیمن و ورود اسپرم به سیستم تناسلی زنان فعالیت‌­های عوامل ظرفیت­‌زدا کاهش می­‌یابد، در حالی که عوامل ظرفیت­‌یابی باعث آماده­‌سازی اسپرم می­‌شوند. در این مطالعه با تمرکز بر بیان دقیق نقش پروتئین­‌هایی که فرآیند ظرفیت‌­یابی را تحریک یا مانع می­‌شوند، مورد بررسی قرار گرفتند. اگر مطالعات پس از بررسی فرایند ظرفیت­‌یابی در حیوانات مختلف در مسیر انسانی متمرکز شوند، احتمالاً نقش پروتئین‌­های مناسب برای فناوری کمک باروری انسانی و لقاح آزمایشگاهی بهتر درک خواهد شد.
