استفاده از داروهای تحریک تخمک گذاری در سیکل های درمانی ART می تواند با عوارض جانبی نظیر سندرم تحریک بیش از حد تخمدان و یا افزایش ریسک سرطان همراه باشد. همچنین این وضعیت جهت زنان با ریسک بالا نظیر سندرم تخمدان پلی کیستیک مد نظر می باشد. تکنیک بلوغ آزمایشگاهی تخمک برای اولین بار جهت بیماران با سندرم تخمدان پلی کیست و بیماران در ریسک سندرم تحریک بیش از حد تخمدان به کار گرفته شد. با این وجود، کاربرد درمانی تکنیک بلوغ آزمایشگاهی تخمک بعلت کاهش پتانسیل رشد و باروری همچنان ضعیف می باشد. کاهش در میزان بلوغ تخمک در محیط آزمایشگاه و نیز باروری، همچنین کاهش در تولید بلاستوسیت در سیکل های درمانی "بلوغ آزمایشگاهی تخمک" گویای رشد نامطلوب کوتاه مدت تخمک بالغ شده در محیط آزمایشگاهی در مقایسه با تخمک های بالغ شده در محیط تخمدانی می باشد.
